Beach Volleyball

What’s better than Volleyball? Getting a tan while you play Volleyball!

Although you may not be on a tropical vacation, it doesn’t mean you can’t escape to a place filled with sunshine, sand, sports and good times. CSSC Co-ed Beach Volleyball Leagues offer various formats and skill divisions, so there's something for everyone ranging from the beach rookie to the seasoned veteran. With multiple courts onsite, there are always dozens of other teams around, making Beach Volleyball one of the CSSC’s most social sports.

After your game, meet up with your teammates and other players to enjoy exclusive food and drink specials at one of the CSSC's many Sponsor Bars around Calgary.

League Length
  • Spring, Summer: 8-weeks

  • Fall: 5-weeks

All teams play once a week on the day they select when registering.

Typical Game Times
  • Evening Leagues: 6pm to 8:30pm

  • Afternoon Leagues: 1pm to 5pm

While our leagues are self-officiated, there is a Beach Volleyball Coordinator onsite to help manage equipment, time and scores. Matches are best of three - rally-point scoring to 25 points in games one and two, game three (if needed) is rally-point to 15 - and bookings are typically 90 minutes to 1.75 hours long.

These leagues are 'double opponent,' meaning you get double the fun: you get to play two matches each night against two different opponents.

4's - Co-ed

Games are played 4 on 4 with at least one female player on the court.

6's - Co-ed

Games are played 6 on 6 with at least two female players on the court.

Divisions are based on the experience and skills of a team - not on their competitive behaviour! No matter what skill level you register for, all players are expected to play with a 'fun-first, winning-second' attitude.

Please note that the below divisions may not be offered every season or day. If you have any questions about the different skill levels or where to place yourself, just call us!

Recreational

This division is for teams who are newer to the sport, or teams that consist of a mix of semi-experienced and inexperienced players. Some players may still be learning the rules of Volleyball, meaning the flow of the game will not always be natural. An average game will feature some bumping, passing and hitting, but the focus is often on just getting the ball over the net, and underhand serves are more common than overhand. If the majority of players are experienced, and wish to hard-hit, then the team should move up to a higher level if available.

In this division, you cannot:

  • hard hit

  • jump serve

  • back row attack

Recreational Plus

This division is for teams with slightly more experience and skill than in the Recreational division. The flow of the game will be quicker than the Recreational division as there will be fewer stoppages and rule clarifications. Players can hold rallies with more consistency, have seen success in the Recreational division, or are simply looking for a bit more of a challenge. Hard-hitting is more commonly seen and accepted in this division, but is still limited.

In this division, you cannot:

  • jump serve

  • back row attack

Intermediate

This division is for teams with mainly experienced Volleyball players. The flow of the game will be quicker than the Recreational or Recreational Plus divisions, and hard-hitting is more common place. An average game will feature three hits on most plays and some good blocks, but the hitting is not overly hard, the passes are not always crisp, and teams generally do not have organized attacks. Not all players in this division are highly skilled, but players are experienced and knowledgeable in the sport.

In this division, you cannot:

  • jump serve

  • back row attack

Intermediate Plus

This division is for teams with more experience and skill than the average team in Intermediate. The flow of the game is fast, as all players can hit, pass and serve with accuracy and intention, and have a few heavy hitters on the squad. There are no rule restrictions on serving and hitting, as seen in lower divisions, and teams now have the option of incorporating a Libero.
